We've been a little obsessed with the do and don'ts of grinding coffee lately, so it's probably best if we give that a rest and take a look at something different ...
Following our post back in 2017 We're on a Waste Reduction Journey we thought you might be interested in a progress update.
The war on waste efforts are starting to make a difference in the coffee industry. There are more and more sustainable and recyclable products being introduced including environmentally friendly takeaway cups. So when you're out and about and you don't have a reusable cup handy, now there's no need to either go without or hang your head in shame when you're desperate for a coffee.
la Casa del Caffe is now stocking Tree Free Global's 8oz cups and lids and our cafes are beginning to convert for the good of all.
Tree Free Global make eco-friendly products by using bagasse which is a by-product of sugarcane after the juice has been extracted. Their production processes require less energy and fewer natural resources to manufacture their produce and will compost in less than 60 days.
In their words:
"Tree Free Global’s vision is to reduce the footprint on our planet by using natural resources which are renewable, biodegradable, compostable and sustainable.
Sugarcane is an annual crop as opposed to tree plantations which can take up to 20 years to mature. We use less resources than a tree plantation and our crops are harvested and regrown saving soil erosion and habitat. Once the sugarcane juice is extracted, we use the pulp once burned (Saving Emissions) to make our bagasse products.
We consider our products impact on the environment in both manufacture and disposal. By using a waste product from an annual crop, we already achieve significant environmental gains. Our cups lining, and packaging lids are plant-based. We use a bioplastic derived from corn starch which is also renewable, biodegradable, composable and sustainable.
Being Entirely plant based our cups and packing will commercially compost. In a home compost trial our Tree Free Packaging broke down completely leaving only nutrients behind in less than 30 days, our Tree Free cups were gone in 60 days and our PLA lids were gone in 90."
